July 2012 brought us to Hope Lake Trail, and July 2016 will hopefully bring us back. If you’ve never been to Telluride, Colorado, you have to go at some point in your life. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in America, and I’m from Vermont so I know pretty. A mixture of lush forest paths, rock studded landscapes and flowery hilltop meadows makes Hope Lake a picturesque trail anyone would be delighted to take a stroll on. Due to the recent death of my favorite fly rod, I’ve been forced to discuss other things with you this week, and I’d like to tell you all about a little slice of heaven called Wabakimi Provincial Park. I don’t remember much about Jennie Lakes Trail due to a severe case of mild altitude sickness, but it was a really nice trail (I think). DEATH! It comes for us all; there is no escaping it. For some it comes much too soon (JFK, Abraham Lincoln) and for others it just can’t come soon enough (Donald Trump, Justin Bieber). And the other day it came far too soon for my cherished companion who was always with me and who shared countless hours of fun with me. Yes, death came for my favorite fly rod, my Redington Pursuit 8’6” 5wt.
Shortness of breath. Dizziness. Disorientation. Nausea. These are just 4 of the symptoms you can experience when getting high. No silly, I don’t mean smokin’ the reefer, I mean hiking at altitude! Jeeze, what’s on YOUR mind? Today I’m going to stray from the norm of introducing you to a new trail, and instead give you my top 4 suggestions on how to avoid altitude sickness, or even the start of symptoms at moderate elevations.
When we first started this blog I was adamant that I was only going to discuss fly-fishing. But as winter sets in here in Colorado and the amount of open water dwindles I’ve revisited my convictions and decided there is no harm in expanding my horizons. And when Crystal told me about a free ice fishing clinic that was being held by Colorado Parks and Wildlife I decided to check it out.
We got lost and accidentally climbed the wrong 12,000′ mountain. Initially we had intended to end up in Butler Gulch, but somehow ended half way up Red Mountain instead. While it was really lovely, it wasn’t where we were trying to get to, and that was somewhat of a problem…
Misfortune turned into an amazing fishing trip when our plans went wrong. Check out Jennie Lake for some pretty sweet fly fishing.
