Winter Fishing: Tail Water of the Big Thompson
Getting cold outside? Time to go fishing! Andre explains how to continue fishing through the winter months by finding a Tail Water.
Winter Fishing – Clear Creek
Clear Creek must really have it out for me. I just can’t catch a break at this place. I’ve now been to Clear Creek three times and every time I’ve dealt with inclement weather. Twice I’ve had to deal with 20+ mph winds and most recently bitter, bitter cold.
Bear Lake Trail – Rocky Mountain National Park
This past weekend brought us a visit from Andre’s sister Lisa, and our brother-in-law Seth. They are also super oudoorsy and we love going on wine tastings hikes with them. So when they came to town for a visit we just knew we had to show them around our new playground, Rocky Mountain National Park.
Golden Ponds Park & Nature Area
Located in Longmont, Colorado, Golden Ponds & Nature Area is just one of the many local park and wildlife areas that the Boulder/Denver suburbs have to offer. It’s the first open space I had a chance to explore when we moved from LA, and I love it. Parking is easy to find at the end of 3rd street, and there are well maintained bathrooms, a water fountain, and a covered picnic area right at the trailhead.
Boulder Creek Fly Fishing
Boulder Creek is a quant little stream that flows right through the heart of Boulder, Colorado. You can even fish for and catch trout right in the middle of town. I, however, ventured just outside of Boulder to wet my line.
“Inexperienced Hikers?!?”
A few weeks ago Andre and I were hiking Cub Lake Trail, when we had an odd exchange with another couple on the path. Andre and I had stopped to take pictures for the post I was going to write, and were taking an extra moment to re-hydrate. That’s when they came up the trail.
Clear Creek Fly Fishing
If you’ve ever watched an NFL game on TV I’m sure you’ve seen a Coors Light commercial with Sam Elliott talking about how they only use clear, refreshing Rocky Mountain water and that Coors is “Born in the Rockies”. Well that clean, clear, refreshing Rocky Mountain water they’re talking about is Clear Creek, which flows from the mountains down towards Denver and through Golden, Colorado the home of Coors Brewing Company.

Deer Mountain Trail – Rocky Mountain National Park
When you arrive at the trailhead for Deer Mountain Trail (DMT) you may look up the 1,210 feet of elevation gain to the summit and think twice about your trail decision. But don’t despair! The trail’s numerous switchbacks make for a pleasant adventure without too much exertion.
Reading The River
Reading a river and identifying lies is one of the most important skills you can possess as a fly fisherman. If you can’t recognize spots where fish are likely to be holding you won’t cast to those spots and subsequently won’t catch any fish.
Here is a quick case study.
